INFORE and METRICS projects

At an increasing rate, industrial and scientific institutions need to deal with massive data flows streaming in from a multitude of sources. The data volumes are expected to dramatically grow in the future. Processing these data often requires not only using an high performance computing infrastructure, but also having data scientists, who are typically not expert programmers, program complex workflows, with a vast number of parameters to tune through time-consuming repeated programming and testing.
INFORE will address these challenges and will pave the way for real-time, interactive extreme-scale analytics and forecasting. The ability to forecast, as early as possible, a good approximation to the outcome of a time-consuming and resource-demanding computational task allows to quickly identify undesired outcomes and save valuable amount of time, effort and computational resources.
INFORE will also design and develop a flexible, pluggable, distributed software architecture that is programmable and set up by graphical data processing workflows. The INFORE prototype will be tested on massive real-world data from the life sciences, financial and maritime domains.

In this talk the maritime domain use case is described in detail. Data from AIS and satellites are used for supporting the autonomous decision-making process of a hybrid robotic network composed of fixed sensors and autonomous mobile surface vehicles equipped with passive sonars. The network uses multiple flows of information to identify suspicious events and to autonomously adapt its configuration for improving the detection and classification of malicious vessels.

The talk will also provide information about the METRICS project. It will organise challenge-led robotics competitions in the four Priority Areas (PAs) identified in the topic ICT-09-2019-2020: Healthcare, Inspection and Maintenance, Agri-Food, and Agile Production. METRICS is designed to organise competitions as reproducible and objective evaluation campaigns and aims to structure in a sustainable way the European robotics and Artificial Intelligence (AI) community around the four PAs.
